About Us

Speech into Text is a free online speech-to-text tool that turns your spoken words into written text. It runs in your web browser, so there is nothing to download, install, or sign up for.

Our mission

Typing takes time, and for many people it is slow or tiring. We built Speech into Text to make writing easier by letting you speak and watch your words appear on the page as you talk. The tool is free for everyone, and we keep it simple enough to start using in seconds.

What we offer

How it works

Speech into Text uses the speech recognition built into your browser. In Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge, this relies on the same voice recognition technology used for voice typing, so an internet connection is needed while you dictate. The text you write is kept in your browser rather than stored on our servers.

Who we serve

Students use it to draft essays and take lecture notes. Writers and bloggers use it to get first drafts out quickly. Professionals use it for emails, reports, and meeting summaries. It is also helpful for people with repetitive strain injuries, dyslexia, or other conditions that make typing difficult, and for anyone practising pronunciation who wants to see their words written down.

Yes. There is no charge to use the tool, and you do not need to create an account or enter payment details.

Do I need to sign up or create an account?

No. You can open the site and start dictating immediately.

Do I need to download or install anything?

No. Speech into Text runs entirely in your web browser on desktop and mobile devices, so there is nothing to install.

Can I use Speech into Text on my phone or tablet?

Yes. The page is designed to work on smartphones and tablets as well as computers. Voice input depends on your browser's support, so Chrome is the most reliable choice on mobile.

Can I use the text I create for work or school?

Yes. The text you dictate belongs to you, and you can use it for personal, academic, or professional purposes. Please review it for accuracy before you submit or publish it.

Using the tool

How do I start dictating?

Choose your language from the language menu, allow microphone access when your browser asks, and click the microphone button. Speak clearly and your words will appear in the text box. Click the microphone button again, or press the Esc key, to stop.

Why does the tool ask for microphone permission?

The tool needs access to your microphone to hear your voice and convert it into text. Click Allow when your browser asks. You can revoke this permission at any time in your browser settings.

The microphone button does not work. What should I do?

Check that your microphone is connected and that you clicked Allow when the browser asked for permission. If you previously blocked the permission, open your browser's site settings and allow the microphone for this site, then reload the page. Using Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge usually solves the problem.

Which browser works best?

Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge offer the most complete support for the speech recognition feature this tool uses. If voice input does not start in another browser, try Chrome or Edge.

Can I type without using my voice?

Yes. The built-in on-screen keyboard lets you type letters and special characters with a mouse or touchscreen. You can also type directly in the text box.

Can I type Arabic without using my voice?

Yes. The built-in on-screen keyboard lets you type Arabic letters and special characters with a mouse or touchscreen, without speaking.

Can I combine speaking and typing?

Yes. Many people dictate most of their text and then use the keyboard for corrections or for characters that are hard to pronounce. You can switch between the two at any time.

How do I add punctuation?

You can use the punctuation buttons on the on-screen keyboard, or dictate common punctuation marks by name, such as "comma" or "period", depending on the language you have selected.

Can I add my own words or commands?

Yes. The custom dictionary lets you add words, names, or phrases that the recognition should handle the way you want, so you can keep specialised vocabulary accurate.

What is the word counter for?

The live word counter shows how many words you have written so far. You can turn it on or off in the settings, which helps when you are working toward a word limit.

Can I change the font and the text size?

Yes. You can choose a font and adjust the font size so the text is comfortable to read while you work.

Is there a dark theme?

Yes. You can switch to the dark theme in the settings if you prefer a darker screen while dictating.

Is there a full-screen mode?

Yes. Full-screen mode hides distractions so you can focus on dictation.

Languages and accuracy

Which languages are supported?

Speech into Text supports many languages, including Arabic, English, French, Spanish, German, Italian, Portuguese, Chinese, Japanese, and Indonesian. Open the language menu to see the full list and select the language you want to speak.

How do I change the language?

Click the language button at the top of the page, search or scroll through the list, and select the language you want. Choose the language before you start dictating so the recognition matches the words you will speak.

Can I dictate in more than one language in the same text?

You can switch languages between sentences by changing the language menu. For best results, switch languages at a natural pause rather than in the middle of a sentence.

How accurate is the voice recognition?

Accuracy depends on your microphone quality, accent, speaking speed, and background noise. For the best results, use a good microphone, speak clearly at a natural pace, and choose the correct language before you start.

Why are some words written incorrectly?

Speech recognition sometimes misunderstands words, especially names, technical terms, or words that sound similar. Correct the text by typing, or add the word to the custom dictionary so it is recognised next time.

Does speech to text require an internet connection?

Yes. In Chrome, speech recognition is processed by Google's speech service, so you need an active internet connection to dictate text.

Text, copying, and sharing

Can I copy or share my text?

Yes. Use the copy button to paste your text into any document, email, or app. You can also share it directly to WhatsApp.

How do I download my text?

Use the download button to save your text as a file. You can choose a plain text file or a Word document.

Can I print my text?

Yes. Use the print button to print the text on your printer.

Can I undo a mistake?

Yes. Use the undo and redo buttons, or press Ctrl+Z and Ctrl+Y on your keyboard. Clearing the page can also be undone with the undo button.

Can I translate or search my text?

Yes. The Translation button opens Google Translate with your text, and the Google and YouTube buttons open a search for your text in a new tab.

Does the word count include spaces?

No. The word counter counts words, not characters, so spaces and punctuation marks are not counted as words.

Privacy and your data

Is my speech recorded or stored?

We do not record or store your audio. Your browser's speech recognition converts your voice into text while you speak.

Where is my text saved?

Your text, dictionary, and preferences are kept in your browser's local storage on your own device. They are not sent to our servers. For more detail, see our Privacy Policy.

Will I lose my text if I close the page?

If auto-save is turned on, your text is kept in your browser so it is still there when you return. Turn on auto-save in the settings if you want this. Clearing your browser's site data removes saved text.

Do I need to accept cookies?

Speech into Text does not set tracking cookies of its own. It uses browser local storage to remember your settings. Read our Cookie Policy for details and for how to manage this storage.
